Never Walk Alone

Men walking together and helping each other

Originally a show tune from Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, today, ‘you’ll never walk alone’ lyrics will probably be more familiar to football supporters. And, when sang at great volume by thousands of fans, it must be a great encouragement for the players.

As I journeyed through life, I recognise that the times I’ve walked alone, when I’ve neglected friendships, not shared challenges, or simply been too proud to admit problems, have been my darkest. We are not meant to walk alone.

We need to cheer each other on

I know for me when things are tough, I tend to get my head down, socialise less and focus on what needs to be done. I don’t take time out to meet up with mates, do fun things, or share what’s bothering me. Yet, it’s especially at these times when I think we need cheering on! Spending some time chatting about challenges can give a different perspective and often help to work some problems out. The act of simply sharing troubles can just lighten the load and at least you know that somebody else knows.

Walking is a good way for men to share burdens

You may not realise, but May 2019 was ‘National Walking Month’? I didn’t either, but I had already organised a walking weekend for a group of guys in the Peak District for June. Walking, as well as having loads of health benefits enables guys to chat.

Men tend to talk better sitting or walking side by side as this is less threatening. Harry Brod a Sociologist suggests that the side-by-side shoulder orientation is a good way for men to talk and share burdens.

Brod also said discovered “Numerous studies have established that men are more likely to define emotional closeness as working or playing side-by-side, while women often view it as talking face-to-face. Men, for example, derive intimacy from playing and watching sports.”

Regardless of whether we look at this metaphorically or physically we shouldn’t be walking alone. Our time is precious, but time spent with other guys is important so that we can share the load, support each other, and cheer each other on when needed.

I know the last time I went walking in the peak district with a group of friends there were breath-taking views, no mobile signal and a choice of some great beers back at the local pub!
